Young Lizard Care

After hatching, the young lizards should be placed in a tank (not with the parents or any other animals that may eat them). Make the set up appropriate for the species of lizard. Their egg tooth will fall off a few days after hatching. The hatchlings must slowly adjust to their parents’ climate. There is no reason to keep them warmer. This will allow them to grow more quickly, but will also cause negative side effects. The calcium won’t be maintained and rickets or other metabolic bone diseases will occur. Vitamin B complex deficiencies and convulsive trembling may develop also. Not lowering the temperature at night will also cause these diseases to occur. Ultraviolet lighting will definately be needed. To allow as much of the ultraviolet light as possible to reach the lizards, you will need a covering of wire screening. Some shade must be provided also.

Some lizard species take their first food soon after birth while others can take a few weeks. You should not lose patience and do not begin to force-feed them. Doing this will cause them a lot of stress which will make them become unhealthy. It will also make them become less hardy in the future. The young lizards should be fed a variety of food prepared with a lot of care. They should also be fed often. The food must be sprinkled with calcium and vitamin supplements which can be bought at pet stores. The young will eat the same as the adults but in smaller sizes of course.

Most lizards should be held frequently at a young age so that they will become more used to you.
